Hello all, I'm hoping that owning a mounataineer isn't an issue BC of the site being Serious Exploreration. My first SUV was an Explorer XLT. With my 2002 Mountaineer 95Kmiles I have serious issues from the transmission acting up when I put it in reverse to a new hum coming off the rear end. I saw one of the posts having to do with this hum. My question is, will this fix be something at at home mechanical can do or should I leave this one up to the pro's?

Welcome to the club... Have you serviced your rear end? (no pun intended) with fresh gear oil.

My wife's 02 explorer developed a hum from the rear and it turned out to be the right side (Passenger) axel bearing. I didn't have the tools for this so I had it done. Works great now, no hum. About $350

Humm, gear oil...I think we are on the original fluid. Is this something I can do? What do you recommend?

Welcome to the forum! I would have to agree with everyone else. Replace the fluid and go from there. If you do a search you should find a step by step for this.
