Hey everyone I've been researching here and there for an 03 xlt 4.0 that I just bought on the cheap, I figured I'd just come here and ask the question...

I bought this thing with NO transmission in it.. what year can I get a trans from? I read some places only 02 to 04 work then I had a ford guy tell me 02 to 05 work and 05 is the beefed up version. So what year can I actually pull a transfmission from with no worries?

The main thing is the rear of the 4x2 and 4x4 transmissions are different, obviously one is setup to connect to a drive shaft while the other is setup to mate with a transfer case.

I'd get one out of a 05 with low miles. Just be sure the numbers on the transmission match.

What do the numbers have to match?

Model number of the transmission. I "think" 2003+ are all the same other than the 4x2 vs 4x4 and only 2002 had two different models used. but I'm not 100% sure, maybe someone else can confirm...

Oh, mine literally has no trans in it. Though I do know it's 4x4

First, find out whether the '03 had a 5R55W or 5R55S transmission. Important since the PCM (computer) will be programmed specifically for one or the other, and while either will "work", the wrong one will confuse the issue seriously by throwing transmission codes, and your speedometer/odometer will not work properly.

The two have different gear ratios, but I don't recall when they quit using the "W". imp
