- 1997 Ford Explorer
This is my first post on this board but I spend a lot of time on Ford-Trucks.com and Jeepforum.
Anyway, my father in law asked if I wanted a Ford Explorer for free. He gave it to his son in law last year but his son had all kinds of driveability issues after putting some tires on it. A neighbor had told him it was probably the front diff or the trans. Anyway he was going to junk it so I offered to go up to drive two hours to Spokane to bring it back on my trailer. It sat for 8 months.
When I got there it started up first try after jumping the battery. Sounded nice and quiet. Drove it onto the trailer and it made some weird noises from the front end. Brought it home and just happen to look at the tires on the rig. In the front were 2 almost new 235x75R15 tires, and in the back were 2 worn 255x70R16 tires. See the problem here?? yeah....
It gets better. I look in the back and there just happened to be 2 235x75R15 tires on Explorer Rims that were in decent shape. So I swapped the bigger tires in the back for the ones inside in the Explorer. Drives great! LOL So here it is. Found service records from 1998-2008 in it. Has 190k on the odometer. I checked all the fluids and they look good but I'm thinking of changing everything from the diffs to the engine.
From the original window sticker here are the specs.
1997 Ford Explorer Sport 4x4
2 Door
4.0SOHC, 5 Speed Automatic Trans
4.10 gears
Looks to be in decent shape and everything works except for the following:
Torn Vinyl on the Center Console
"Explorer" Side Steps rusted all to heck. I might just take them off.
All hub caps missing
A/C does not work and actually blows hot air. I checked the pressure and the low end and it seems fine and added a little freon to no affect. Also checked fuse #18 for the A/C by the steering wheel and it was fine.
So without having read the forum posts yet....Where do I go on troubleshooting the A/C? Are there more fuses and relays to check? I want to start with the simple stuff before I start throwing parts at it. I'll take it in if need be, but I have a feeling its something easy.
