2005 Ford Explorer XLT
Good Evening, all!

I recently purchased a 2005 XLT (dark blue, no running boards or wheel trim) after semi-retiring my 97 Moutaineer with 222k. Looking through the posts I feel I should be aware of the following issues: (correct me if I'm wrong)

Spongy Brakes
Is it the actual brakes or the brake cylinder itself? I have a shudder at medium/hard braking problem and plan on replacing brakes/rotors/

Transmission
It seems the 3rd generation has some tranny problems. The only problem I have had was in the parking lot of Dunkin Donuts one morning. I went to put it in reverse and got nothing. Drive nothing. Tried it twice and on the third try it engaged. Has been fine ever since. Should I be concerned?

Wheel Bearings
I've noticed when taking sharp curves I have a slight noise coming from the right side. Is this a bearing problem? Should I replace both right and left?

Squeaky Front End
Sway bar bushings. Best idea is to have them replaced. What size swaybar? I will be going with Moog bushings.

Anything else I should be aware of? I bought the truck with 47k and now have 62k (6 months). I drive around 45 miles to and from work (90 total) a day so I need reliability. The Moutaineer never let me down. I appreciate your responses!

Welcome! I have an 03 XLT, no problems with the brakes or transmission... the first one failed at 33k, so the new one has done well. If you don't have a warranty, I would suggest a 100k/5/7yr Ford warranty... I have no squeaky front end nor odd sounds when turning. :)

Are you keeping it stock?
