Hi,
Bought a '94 Explorer Sport a couple weeks ago, been lurking and learning about all the fun I have to look forward to with the auto hubs failing and some of the other components that tend to fail-- same learning curve on every vehicle I've owned! Though this is the oldest one I've had in a couple decades.
At any rate- it's got 69,000 miles, clearly has sat around a bit. When I checked it out prior to purchase, it ran smoothly. However, when I picked it up it had a little miss. That seemed to get worse as I covered the 60 miles or so to get home and then around town. Accompanied with some pinging and low power. Runs at low rpms with bad miss when started cold, improves quite a bit as it gets to operating temp-- which takes quite a while.
Checked simple stuff- found an abraded plug wire and fixed that up. Cleaned the air flow sensor. Then...pulled off the IAC and found a flat gasket blocking it off. Seafoamed it, that improved it a bit. Cleaned up the IAC, replaced and altered the gasket to allow air exchange. Ran pretty much the same. Pulling the plug on IAC did nothing. Went under to check the exhaust leaks and all of a sudden the engine gets very smooth and the rpm kick up about 1000...lasted about ten seconds then dropped. Did it a gain a few minutes later. Great, my Exploder is possessed of some kind of halloween spirit.
This ring any immediate bells? I'm guessing that I'm in for IAC anyway, but it sounds to me like something else is up too..
