1994 Explorer 2-Door 5spd
Ok recently bought my 94 explorer 4x4 2-door 5-speed for 1200. Had 131k new head gaskets,VC gaskets,Fuel filter,wires,plugs,etc.. Well I started driving it to and from work and noticed I was losing power when I gave it around more than 1/2 throttle (as in giving more than 1/2-3/4 throttle it actually starts going slower)and had a CEL light. Well it had sat about 2-3 years before I got it so i figured maybe just bad gas. Well ran couple tanks through and same problem. Person I live with is a mechanic and had a Snap-on OBD1 scanner so he put it on and the scanner tried to say it needs a knock sensor. Through some thorough research I've learned it has no such thing. So asked a couple peoples advice, like cleaning MAF (which i did), etc. No headway yet. Funny thing is the CEL light doesn't come on for about 5 minuites after starting it and before it comes on it runs fine and doesnt have this problem with power. Also i notice occasionly when im driving the CEL will turn off for minute then pop back on at random times.Any suggestions? I'd appreciate the help.

Another question unrelated when the truck is fully warmed up and lets say im in 3rd gear round 1500rpm then i need to increase speed , when i give the throttle a stab it starts having this (kind of hard to explain) clanging or metal rubbing? noise as it accelerates coming from the transmission hump area. Now that was just an example but basically in any gear accept 1st and i give the throttle a little stab it makes this noise. (Dont think its tranny related but not sure exactly, was told it had a jasper tranny put in 2 years and 10k miles ago).

Any help on either issue would be much appreciated.

Did that Snap on scanner give the code number that it came up with? The only knock sensor code in my code list is a KOER 225, which doesn't seem quite right. If the expensive scanner didn't give the code number, you can pull codes with nothing more expensive than a paper clip using the instructions posted in the EEC-IV forum.

Another basic diagnostic test is to check the fuel pressure. Some of the symptoms you describe could be from fuel starvation, which can be checked by seeing what the fuel system is doing.

does it have to crank for a bit before it starts in the morning (the first start of the day, when its cold.. after its been sitting)

im thinking fuel filter/pump

Im going to have to check the scanner for a particular code, and/or paperclip method which i did read about. And it doesnt take a while to start in the morning but sometimes starting it on a very cold morning it will crank, start, stall then on the 2nd try always start no problem. Fuel filter was replaced bout 1 month ago with the hope that it would help this issue.

well i rescanned it and got much different results. This time i got 558- EGR Vacuum Regulator (EVR) Ckt fault, 157- MAF signal too low, 181-Cruise Rich Limit Bank 1 still lean, 182-Cruise Rich Limit Bank 2 still lean, 186-Inj Pulse Width High or MAF Too Low, 332-EGR Valve not opening, Speed sensor ckt fault. Now some of these are obvious Need EGR valve, need speed sensor(cruise didnt work), need MAF or maybe just a clean (hopefully). But the Cruise rich limit I'm not quite sure what there exactly pointing to, i understand it means both sides are too lean but what is the cruise rich limit?

Before you start assigning blame to specific parts, we should probably diagnose these a little more carefully.

According to my code list, 558 can only be a KOEO code. The others, I'm assuming, are CM codes. Usually the best place to start with a laundry list of codes is to start with the KOEO codes. (If needed, review my "notes on pulling EEC-IV codes" to see how to distinguish between KOEO and CM codes).

KOEO 558 points to a fault in the EVR circuit. The EVR solenoid is used to modulate the amount of vacuum applied to the EGR valve to control how far it opens. In my experience with these kinds of codes, the computer is not really sensitive to faults in these circuits -- usually these codes are only set when there's a full open in the circuit or a short to ground. This one should be fairly straightforward to track down with a voltmeter and a wiring diagram (even the one in Chiltons might be good enough).

I expect that fixing the cause of the KOEO 558 will also resolve the CM 332. It's possible that the other A/F mixture related codes will go away, too, though I wouldn't put any money on that outcome. In either case, I would resolve the KOEO 558, then clear CM, and see if the other codes come back.

The only KOER code was the EGR Valve not opening code, everything else was KOEO. More than one person was saying that theyve heard of explorers having FPR problems which can cause other codes to throw. But then again had a lot of different advice, not a big fan of the shops in my area, I've always been a person that tries to take care of things myself. Ill try what you had reccomended.
