Hello everyone,

I own a '98 4.0 XLT and need to find an Explorer specialist having just been told by all 3 of my nearest Ford dealerships that they can't do the work I need on my explorer.

I live in Wisbech, Cambridgshire (right on the Norfolk border - 10 miles from Kings Lynn) and I wondered if anyone can tell me of anyone in the Uk who you would regard as a fix all, Explorer specialist? My current issues with the vehicle are indicator switch and a strange ABS problem. I also have worn brak pipes (not dangerous yet but getting there).

Would greatly appreciate the help.

John

i have the same problems here(finding a ford dealer who knows about these things)
if you are reasonably mechenical or have a trusted mechanic you can use , you will find most of your answers on here

If your ABS kicks in at about 10mph, just unplug it by the air con condenser till you can get it fixed.. mine's unplugged.. and a replacement stalk can be found on ebay or something and is an easy fix

Indicator switch is easy

I can't help with your other problem but the indicator/ multi function switch is easy to change. A few fiddly screws and not much space but it will take no more than half an hour. You'll need a torq screwdriver to remove the switch itself- just two screws- but the cowling screws are phillips type accessible through the bottom cowling. You do not need to remove the lower panel or bottom cowling just let it hang there when you prise out the top cowling to access the switch. The electrical connectors just plug in (two or three blocks).Try not to break the clips holding them in. You might be tempted to dismantle and check out the faulty one, but bits fly everywhere. A pal of mine with infinite patience got it back together but it still didn't work!

You might be able to get a replacement s/hand from Explorer Parts UK (see E-Bay). As I discovered not all identical looking switches are the same. USA ones do not work the wipers as they should and wrong year UK also gives rise to some strange functions. if going s/hand try to get one from the same year or check out the part nos first. I gained a collection of switches until I got it right. It would have been far cheaper to have bought from the dealer in the first place
