Welcome to the Forum ! , From the posts so far it seems like your friends engine is well worth it , common issues with the first gens come from abused or neglected automatic transmissions if yours is equipped with one check the color and smell of the fluid .
it is an auto trans. the guy says its slipping a little but still engages all gears fine. How do i check it? i dont have the explorer with me just yet still working off the payments before i can get it. does it have a trans dip stick or will i have to do it off the trans itself? ive been reading the post for an auto to stick conversion. id rather have a stick than auto anyways so i may do the swap. depends on the shape of the trans thats in it as to how soon the swap happens.

It has a dipstick , look for the coil on the top left of motor and it should be behind the upper intake manifold there , If that trans is slipping , there is no fixing it without putting money up for a rebuild , a 5 Speed swap sounds like a good idea , but it looks to be time and labor extensive , sourcing the parts etc etc .
if there is a dipstick that will make it alot easier. my friend wasnt sure if this one would have it or not(he works for a transmission shop). i keep hearing more from the guy who has it now and sounds like he doesnt know whats wrong but he keeps mentioning new problems all the time, which im basically getting the thing for free (labor trade for the explorer) so it doesnt bother me if it needs work. it sounds like the motor might have serious issues which if it does then im just going to 5.0 5speed swap it because i can find 5.0 with T5 transmissions dime a dozen around here.
