1989 Ford Supercoupe
Just saying hi, I stumbled onto this site looking for information on Aerostar drivetrains. I have a project rattling around in my head and trying to figure it out. I'm into Ford Thunderbird super coupes, and I'm looking to build a all wheel drive super coupe, Ford tried, but gave up, I figure there is alot more parts available since 1990. I have parts from a 97 Explorer 5.0, and parts from a few 97 -99 rangers, 95 F150 transmission and transfercase (aod) and looking at picking up a 94 AWD Aerostar. The thunderbird uses an aod already, just trying to find a smaller transfercase to fit behind it. Any ideas besides a strait jacket??

Sounds like a great project in the making :D

Thanks, now if the snow would go away I could get started

so if I am reading this correctly, you are aiming to keep the 3.8SC engine, with an AWD t-case, and front diff?

I would use the t-case from the 5.0 explorer as it has a really sweet viscous-coupler that makes for smooth awd driving. I even met a guy who machined the case of one to fit extra clutch-packs, to make it handle a little more power

are you married to the idea of an auto AOD? or is manual an option for you?

do you want to keep the 3.8l mounted longitudally?

also you could get the drivetrain from an AWD tempo/topaz, and then adapt the 3.8sc engine transversely to that trans-axle

transfercase

I have a transfercase from a 97 Explorer 5.0 it looks like it will mount to the back of the aod it has a tag on it ( J2393 4404-05 231712 F77A-VA) is this the one I need. I wanted to go with a automatic, because the M5R2 transmissions the super coupes use have the shifter all the way to the rear for the location.

parts and more parts

Well I pulled the front suspension and engine cradle out of a 2000 Winstar, and just picked up a 2000 Ford Ranger (frame rotted in half). The ranger has 3.73 gears, so I'll be using the front differential to install in my AWD super coupe project. The Winstar I'm going to try using the spindles, and lower A arms. Has anyone messed with the CV joints? The Ranger outer shaft is 27 spline and the Winstar is 26 spline, I haven't tried to mate the outer Winstar to the Ranger shaft yet, but you don't know unless you try.

sounds like a cool project,, my other ride is a 95 t-bird,,, you could check out tccoa.com awesome site for bird enthusiasts i'm a member over there, now gotta get a membership here..
