1996 Explorer XLT V8
Hey guys. I'm a new member but I can already see there's a TON of info on here. I recently bought a '96 Explorer XLT V8 2wd. It seems to be a solid old truck, but it has a few issues.

First issue: CEL. Throwing codes for the camshaft position sensor and EGR valve. Is it worth starting with replacing these parts, or is there a trick to find out if thats what's really going on with the truck?

Second issue: Intermittent windows. They work when they want to, but only from the driver "master" switch. Today they worked all the way home from work, I pulled in the driveway and played with them for a min to see if the other switches worked, and then they stopped working from the master switch again. Just replaced the switch too. I think it's a ground problem in the door.

There's more than that going on with the truck, but these are the more pressing issues. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Reset the CEL first and see which ones come back. Sounds like a vacuum leak. Then keep driving and see if the light comes back on.

Check your fuses and your grounds.

How do you reset the computer on these? I know some cars you can just disconnect the battery, other's have to go through a procedure.

You go to Advance Auto Parts and they read/reset the codes for free. Or you buy a OBDII reader - they have some cheap ones there. Disconnecting battery won't clear the codes, and the engine will have to re-learn the optimal parameters.
Read here about specific codes - the camshaft sensor one can be sometimes a bad alternator (it was in my case).

These trucks have a lot of power window/power door lock issues that are caused by broken wires in the door bundle between the door and the body. Separate the door wiring at the connector, then peel back the rubber cover and look for broken wires.

HAHA you have the exact same codes my truck is having... i had to replace my cam sensor now it reads saying its out of aligned but i know its not because the truck runs superb.. and i get the EGR insufficient code also i had an exaust leak so replaced the EGR tube thinking that was the problem well it fix the exaust leak but the code still comes so its either EGR sensor or value itself.. it doesn't effect the performance of the truck yet

Had the window problem fixed earlier. It was a broken wire in the connector in the door jamb. He just spliced in a new piece of wire and bypassed the connector. Good as new.

As far as the codes go, the truck still runs great so I'm a little reluctant to start messing with stuff.

Any idea what I should expect out of this thing as far as gas mileage goes? 16-17 mpg city is what I'm hoping for with it just being 2wd.

I have an 98 ford explorer 2WD with new wires and plugs i get around 250 a tank

If this thing will only get 12mpg I'm screwed.

I get 15-16MPG in suburban driving. You don't get one of these, especialy with the 5.0L V8, and expect good mileage. ;)

I wasn't expecting good, but was hoping for reasonable.

My 98 5L AWD gets 15MPG for commute. 8 miles city roads one way.
