I changed out the vacumn modulator on my 1992 Ranger XLT 4.0L. Now I have a shift flare when I hit about 20 mph in D or OD. If I take off in 2 it don't happen. If I ease off the throttle in D or OD it isn't noticeable. Has anybody else had the same symptoms and figured out how to fix it? :rangerred::scratch:

Pull codes and see if you get a shift solenoid code. All shift solenoids on the Explorer should be identical, except the lockout solenoid. But I know 100% sure, that solenoids A through C are the same. Also, it might be needed to adjust the bands. Whether it be the OD or the intermediate, or both. GL

Did you use an adjustable or non adjustable modulator? Did you clean the bore where the pin slides? Did you adjust the bands?
I got an adjustable one from Autozone. I did use a scotch brite pad to clean out the large bore despite laying on my back underneath and hardly able to see the damn hole. I did not clean out the tiny hole where the pin goes in. I have not adjusted the bands yet. I'm not sure if I have the double-wrap OD band or the single-wrap as Ford changed it half way through 1992. How could I find out which I have? By looking at the VIN #? None of the parts stores I went to had the non-adjustable modulator. I went to the local Ford dealer and they said they were discontinued. Then the parts guy told me they were $222.00. I was like, what the hell?:frustrate

I have a 1992 Ford Ranger XLT not an Explorer. I know the A4LD transmission was in both though. Mine is a 2WD, no lockout.

Most likely your transmission might have been previously rebuilt, so the rebuilder upgraded to the single wrap band. The non adjustable modulator is available, and is made by Fram. Check WWW.Amazon.Com. I once bought 4 there, so I have spares if you need them (just in case you can't find them anywhere else). You only have two solenoids, and both of them won't show an error code on an A4LD with an EEC-IV system.

Yeah, I don't know if the transmission was rebuilt or not. I think I bought the truck from the original owner. I got it for $600.00 in 2008. Starter went out about a week after I got it, I replaced the brake lines from the front to the back, shocks on the front, rear hangers and shackles, valve cover gaskets, plugs and wires, 15" jeep wheels, yada-yada.

My bad, I automatically assume everybody in the world n an Exploder. Theyre everywhere,!

If I take off in L1 and shift into L2 then D I don't get the engine rev at 20 mph. If I take off in D or OD I get a 1-2 second rev at 20 mph on the speedometer . Everything after 20 mph shifts smooth. If the weather is nice enough this weekend I plan on seeing if I can adjust the modulator, bands and do a drain and filter change.
