New with questions, please.

I've bought a 94 Mazda Navajo for a steal, and it's in great shape and runs awesome. However...the 4x4 and low range buttons on the dash, do not work to kick it into 4x4. How common of a problem is this? What could be wrong? And what would it take to fix it? This is the only major issue with the vehicle, and it has been well kept, maintained, and has never been dogged in the mud. It doesn't seem to effect the vehicle driving at all, but would be something I am wanting to fix to restore it to it's full capabilities.

Anyone have any sort of clue? Thanks.

Thanks a ton. Guess I have a lot of reading to do, and some work to try out and see if I can get it fixed. Glad to know it's not something that is going to kill the truck, or cost me a small fortune to fix. Thanks again.
