Im want to pick up a 1st gen explorer most that are for sale have non working 4x4 is there a common problem with them that I should be aware of?
or if any Illinois,Indiana or Wisconsin members have somthing for fale that would be great

the automatic locking hubs on them are prone to failure.
if you buy one with bad auto hubs, you can convert them to manual for around $200.
which will make them very reliable.

Along with the auto hub's, as pointed out above, the electric shift motor on the transfer case (officially called an "encoder motor") is also a common failure point. Although not as common, the selector switch/buttons on the dash can also go bad.
 






I'd be willing to sell mine , the 4x4 works and it's got manual hubs.
