I grew up playing in the mud and all with Fords. First was an 80 bronco, then a 78 1/2 ton, and finally a 79 with rockwell 2 1/2 ton top loaders w/ 52" tractor tires. I spend years mud racing and trail riding until the enviromentalist took over and the DNR shutdown a lot of the places we rode down, but that's another soap box I'm sure you can relate too. It was also getting to expensive to race anymore. I could no longer compete with the big dollar boys. A few friends and I then crossed over to mud racing our 4 wheelers, but that too fizzled out. I sold everything except the wheeler years ago, but I do miss it.
I have a 2000 Explorer XLT V8. It was my wifes daily driver until we purchased a van for her. I've been kicking around the idea of making a rock crawler out of it since it has the factory V8. The one thing I'm not a fan of is the all wheel drive transfer case. I would like to have the option of low range from time to time. I have also thought about scraping the axles and installing a 4 link with straight axles. I have nver built a 4 link suspension before. My only fear is not getting the geometry right. It would also require a real 302 vs the detuned factory one.
