I just bought, actually am not buying until tommorow, a 1991 ford explorer eddie bauer. It is going to take some work to get it back together, and I will appreciate any help and advice I can get here. I am wanting to put 31" tires on it, and have no idea what the best way to go about lifting this thing. I am doing it more for looks than anything. I also need some parts that I have listed on the wanted board.

Welcome to the site! Hope things go well tomorrow. 31s will fit stock. And a two inch lift can be done very easily and cheaply by adding coil spacers and shackles and add a leafs in the rear. Make sure to post pics ;)

Thanks, have a few questions.

I, just like most, am on a tight budget. I want to lift mine up ASAP, but don't want to do something that will be a waste. The more I look at yalls pics, the more I want at least 33". I saw the Black 1Gen and the Red one in these forums, and man they look sweet. I am ready to invest alot of time into this thing, and promise to keep everyone here updated with pics as I go. yall will have to bear with me though, due to the fact of my budget(have to do this piece by piece). I have been wanting to get a 1gen Explorer ever since my senior trip in Panama City. Thanks to the owner of the maroon one I seen down there lifted and all decked out with brush guard an all. anyways, any advice on the best place to start(links, advice, etc...) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

welcome to the site motox

congrads on getting an X.

hey i have a 91 xlt with 31's on the back are bfg's mudders and on the front are discover some type i picked up in a junk yard with almost new tread on them. the only thing i had to watch was the driver side inner fender so wat i did was take a utilty knife and cut it out just a bit, but watch for wires on the other side. i have gone thru mud up to the doors and bounced around off rocks and still have not rubbed so don't believe those tire fitment guides alot of those off road sites have they r too causious. i was gonna try 33's but that would really push it. wat i also did was angle off my stock bumper even with the front of the truck to give a rugged look with those 31's and definetly won't worry bout any rubbing.

Well, everything went smooth today. Big thanks to david, I believe its X-1 on here, that is where I got my X. I actually went this afternoon and bought another, so I have two. I believe I am good on everything to put it back stock, except the console. I am in need of a console that will fit in a 91 explorer EB. If anyone could help me with this at a pretty reasonable price or trade, I sure would appreciate it. I am really thinking about a 3" body lift with some 31x10.5, let me know what yall think. I will hopefully have pics up this weekend. Thanks again!!!!

Hey,
Glad to see you on here, great bunch of people to talk to. The coil spacers they are talking about are factory ford parts for a 93 f-150, about 35 bucks at the counter for both. For the rear you have 2 choices, add a leaf- pro comp from 4wheel parts for 29 bucks, or shackles, some use the ones from auto zone, others use the warriors, I have a set coming now for the sport. Using that type of lift with the trail master body lift, you can get it up close to 5 inches for around 200 bucks. Best you will get with that is 32's, or maybe narrow 33's. Your ex looks really good with 32's, few members here that have a 4 inch lift with 32's, and I think they look good, that is what I am putting on sport now with the long travel kit till I can do the sas. Call me if you need help, I have done just about every type of lift you can do on the first gen explorer. One more thing I almost forgot, rough country right here in Dyersburg sells 1 1/2 inch coils for 109 bucks a pair, more pricey than spacers, but gives you new spring, btw, spacers are metal, and very strong.
If I left anything out just ask, or try the search feature, tons and tons of good info thru out this site.

That really sounds sweet, so let me get this straight. I am going to spend $250 on a lift(coils, warrior shackles, trailmaster body lift), whatever I invest in tires(32x11.5) and wheels(something 10"wide), and a front end alignment, and will not have any rub?? Or, will I have to do some Redneck engineering on the fender wells to make that work?? I appreciate the help David, hopefully I won't bug you too much on this thing. I know this is a question that will get me flamed(LOL), but my wife is curious about what this is going to do to the gas mileage??? I told her it wouldn't be bad, but she wants a number. If anyone has an answer I would appreciate it.

maybe get a skyjacker 2" lift for $165, and then a 3" body lift, and then get a set of 33x12.5 kumho venture m/t tires for $115 each

David,
Stick with 8 inch wheels, the 10's will cause you to have to trim off front fenders, 32's will work good with the lift you are putting on there. I had 33's on 10's with 6 inches of lift and had to trim some, actually now that I think about it, your 91 doesn't have same trim, 10's may work, but you will have to cut out some of seam on the inside body near your floor boards. As being on a budget I would do the spacers, and shackles, save you about 75 bucks, you can always upgrade later. For alignment you will need different caster shims, these can be bought at napa, try to zero out your camber before alignment, the alignment shop will charge alot to do this, very easy for you to do. After initial lift your tires will look like this...\ / , by adjusting shims you can get it here.. | |, then let an alignment shop finish it up. The shims are like 18 bucks apiece. I still have a couple lieing around, may be able to send you them. Pics, gotta post pics when you get them.

Well you have came to the right place. I got my X not to long ago, and have been on this website non stop. This is the best site devoted to the best Vehicles. I have used this site and from websites that people list you can get amazing deals. I spent $900 on stereo stuff that would have cost 3500 anywhere else.

Well, I bought a 3" body lift today, and a set of nerf bars. I have been bust putting things back together so I can start customizing.
