'99 Explorer Sport XL
Hi, I'm new here. I've had my '99 explorer for 10 years, it's been really good to me, I've tried to keep it in good condition so it will continue to last. I'm currently having issues with it and came across this website, so far I'm glad I did.

Check engine light - I've been getting the same 2 codes no matter what I try changing. P0301 & P0171, somehow they gotta be related. I took to a mechanic & paid $600 for it to run the same if not worse, all he changed was MAF & whatever a Fuel Induction Service Parts, so I got ripped off. I don't want to trust another mechanic right now, I am a female that don't know much about cars, but have I ever learned stuff doing things myself out of Haynes, Chilton and Internet. :) Before the mechanic I first did spark plug #1 and all 6 wires, then the ignition coil, then took to mechanic-MAF. I then talked to uncle, retired mechanic in another state he gave me pointers, so I checked oxygen sensors-which has really got to be my problem but cant get any answers, the camshaft sensor, the DPFE sensor, the fuel filter, the Lucas injector cleaner almost every month. Well the downstream oxy sensor on bank 1, the connectors from the sensor & the harness to PCM were sitting on top of exhaust pipe, melted together. I went to dealership bought a sensor & was told I couldn't order the wire harness to computer, I needed to go to a salvage yard and splice them. I had to send a friend so I assumed they gave her the right one I said I needed for my vehicle, the 4 wire colors from salvage yard don't match my 4 colors to computer, a friend of mine that works on cars helped me and we spliced the colors according to how they sit in the melted plastic connector, I still have "driveablity problems" and keep getting that code, so I figure maybe the heater wires and ground aren't in same location & I have them mixed up, or it could be another sensor like the throttle or ERG or something, ford dealership won't even help me out for like a wire color guide, I bought a digital multimeter & the Chilton's Powertrain Codes & Oxygen Sensors book and it says how to test but I may not get accurate reading due to wires being mixed if they are, and am afraid to test the wire itself that goes to PCM without a harness on em. Sorry this is so long, I am just at a frustrating point, with no money really to take to someone if I wanted to, so any feedback would be cool, thanks
