Hi, We just moved from the '70s to the '90s with our recent purchase of our '92 Explorer. Skipped the '80s altogether.
I'm really impressed with the layout and the knowledge this forum exhibits. It is really easy to use and the people seem to really know their stuff. I've been a Ford fan since learning to drive my first car - '66 Mustang. I've had a lot of experience with small block V-8s with carbs, points and 3 speeds. Moving to a fuel injected, MAF, computer controlled, single belt, 4x4, AOD, and power windows has been interesting. I'm getting used to all the gadgets. Our kids named it "Grandpa" cause we got a great deal on it from grandpa who bought grandma a '98 Explorer. Ours is a '92, XLT, 4.0, 4 dr, 4x4, AOD, power windows, seats & locks, leather, towing package, mags, 148K. It's just getting broken in. Our '77 E-150 has 290K. Grandpa changed the shocks, rotors, drums, wheel cylinders, brakes, bearings, muffler, drive belt, U joints, tires, blower fan and radio. Ford just changed the brake vacuum booster (recall on the studs). Everything seems to be working OK, the interior is excellent, the body is in great shape, but it does have some rocker cancer from being in Illinois. My first projects are to change the plugs (I already found my universal joint), wires, air filter, oils & brake hoses (one has a chunk missing). I'll put in magnetic drain/fill plugs and JCW has some awesome 2/0 battery cables. I'm looking at BBK headers (which I haven't seen mentioned in my browsing), Hellwig sway bars (1 1/8" front, 7/8" rear), a real radiator, larger engine oil cooler, trans cooler, P/S cooler (all flat plate type), air filter, throttle body, round tube hitch and some sort of traction lock. It is fun to drive and I can't wait to get it running better.
