Hello all,

I just found this site today and was hoping you could help me with a maintenance question. I have to get the rear axle seals replaced along with the emergency brake shoes on my 95 XLT 4x4 in Austin, TX. Do any of you guys know where I can get this done for a reasonable amount? I was quoted $290 for both seals, labor, and emerg. brake shoes. Thanks in advance!

Hey Jeff,

Thanks for the help! I thought the quote I received seemed to be high. Unfortunately, my mechanical skills stop at brake pads and simple jobs of the sort.

Axle seals are not bad at all. I tackled it last year and it took about 4 hours. I could do it now in under 2. NO special tools. The hardest part is filling the diff back up with lube.

Raise rear of vehicle
Remove wheels
Remove diff cover
Remove pinion pin, (be carfeful, known to break, I bought an extra before I started just incase.
Remove C clips
Pull Axles Out
Remove Seals

Press new seals in and reassemlbe. Also don't over tighten plastic diff cover, 10-12 ft-lb max. I got a older metal one from a junkyard after a cracked mine.

The hardest part is filling the diff. I also invested in a $10 vacuum/pump the next time, made life so much easier.

Axle Seals $5
Diff Fluid $10-12
Diff cover seal $10 or most people just use ATV silicone.

You have to remember that most shops charge $45.00 or more an hour for labor plus 40% mark up on thier parts too, and if you buy your own parts and take it to them, then you labor will go up also, cause they don't make the mark up on the parts.
