2001 Sport Trac
Hello all first off I'm new to this board but not new to forums all together. I have a 2001 Sport Trac and am in need of some help.

Today I was driving to work and out of the blue I noticed a vibrating feeling and then the check engine light came on. I drove to a dealership and left it there for a diog. test. *it appeared to me that it was missing, like a bad plug*

I just got a call from the dealership and apparently what happened is somehow the timing chaing skipped a tooth and caused a misfire. This misfire bent a valve and therefore I was told that I need to replace the engine! I have 44k on the truck so I'm 8k out of warrenty, I can't believe this is happening I have never heard of such a thing.

What I need is to see if this has happened to anyone else and if it has what did Ford do about it? So if you or anyone you know had something like this happen please let me know. If you know of other places I can post and ask for help will you also please let me know.

Thanks in advance for your help.
Scott

Scott, what is the production date for your ST?

Jason,
I don't have it with me right now but I can get it later.

if you want it fixed cheap. you should be able to just put in a new vavle and fix the timing, as long as the block and head aren't damaged.

That totally SUCKS man !!!
Yeah , I have heard of vehicles skipping timing , I don't think a whole new engine is in order though.
But then again , I am just a body man , not a mechanic.
Good luck man I hope it works out for you.

Oh yeah , welcome to the boards too !!!
Stick around okay ?

when i read this, i thought the exact same thing, but again, im unsure of what years that covers.

brenner, good luck, and keep us updated.

probably what happened is: when the timing jumped, it caused the valve to be open when the piston came up and the piston hit the vavle and bent it. do those new 4 litres have a chain or belt?

If your ST was built before 4/7/2000 it is covered under the 00M12 program and depending on if the cam chain tensioner actually failed or not, then you should be covered under the extended warranty.

If not, your on your own, and chalk up one more blown SOHC :(

if all it did was bend a valve... that is semi easy and not super costly to fix... you may have to have the engine head rebuilt, but that doesnt cost a new motor..... then you just have to get the timing right.....

If it turns out that your problem isn't related to either ONP 00M12 for noisy camshaft tensioners (not likely since when they fail, Ford says it can't cause any harm) or ONP 01M01 for a bad front, left chain guide (can cause damage if it fails and the plastic pieces get into the engine), then Ford also has a program where they will pay up to about 80% for after warranty repairs within the first 50K miles. It will take some digging to find out the name of the program, buy everyone can use it up to two times for after warranty coverage. Your dealer will not tell you about it, but usually will admit to the program once you mention it first.
