Newbie - to Explorer QUESTIONS

OK - new member questions.

02 Explorer Sport - stock.

1. Where are the zerk fittings or are the ball joints lubed for life?

2. When would you change the rear diff fluid - real world figures.

3. When would you replace the ATF and the filter?

4. Where could I find the torque specs for the wheels.

I could not find a general info section....could someone direct me in the proper direction.

1) I don't think stock ball joints have lube fittings, but I'm not sure

2) diff fluid: anytime you think water got in there, or I believe every 60-70k. I recommend going with synthetic fluid after a few thousand miles. I run conventional fluids all around except for synthetic in the diff. With synthetic you can go much longer without a change in the diff.

3) ATF and filter, every 30k

4) wheels: 90-100 ft/lbs

I could not find any zerk fittings - just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

BTW - what is that round object attached to the rear diff?? It looks like some sort of weight/balancer. It is on the pass. side attached to the diff.

I forgot to ask - wheel bearings, when to replace/re grease???

As far as the suspension is concerned, they are lubed for life. But, after a while, they squeak, like the suspension bushings. Ford may have improved the parts then.

The front and rear diffs are lubed for 100K miles and they are loaded with synthetic lube from the factory. But, anytime they are submerged in water like after crossing a river, they are to be replaced. Otherwise, they are fine for 100K miles.

Check your owner manual for normal or severe duty driving for the ATF and filter. Perhaps, they are for 50K.

The torque for the lug nuts are 100 ft/lbs. Check your service guide for anything else.

I believe the round object is part of the ABS setup - the relay maybe??

It is not electrical

The 'big' thing next / attached to the pumpkin seems to be some kind of balance/weight/counter balance.

IF it is part of the ABS, what does it do???
