Hi Guys

I've just bought a 1998 Ex (4.0L SOHC Auto) to act mostly as a tow car, and I've a problem that I would appreciate your advice with:

In 4x4 High or Low ratio, I get a loud clunking/banging coming from the nearside front wheel, when near/on right-hand full lock. It's OK when driving straight, but if you make a tight turn (like when turning into a driveway etc), then the clunking appears and the car shakes a bit  .

What do you think it could be, a C.V. joint problem?? A Ball Joint Problem? Front Transmission problem (if so, then why only when making tight turn?)

It drives fine in 2WD (Rear), and the noise doesn't exist when doing tight turns.

Any clues guys (and thanks in advance for your advice).

Cheers
Kenny

This is perfectly normal. Its called windup. The noise is the wheel slipping. You should never use the 4x4 unless the ground is slippery. If you do use it like this you will end up breaking something. There is no centre diff like landrovers have. Its a part time system. So not on the road unless it's gravel or muddy or snowing. Just leave it in auto and you'll be fine.

Thanks!

Thanks Howard. I do feel more than slightly stupid with what now appears a silly question!

I just got the Ex recently, and I've never had a 4x4 before. I needed a bigger car to do some towing as my Audi wasn't up to the job. The Ex is doing that brilliantly.

Cheers and Thanks.
