just wanted to say hi to all on the forums,im new to the site and have had my explorer for about 2 years now and have had a few issues ,one the heads tap 24/7, my transmission leaks like a toddler (maybe its because of the 31'' mtz's) haha and my drivetrain makes a clunking noise when its put into reverse or when i sit at a light and then give it gas when i first move forward, sounds like a dry clunking, not something that would be in the rear or tranny. any help would be greatly app, if anyone has any info or help,or even some parts for sale that would help keep this thing together, please feel free to email me at richardgood@rock.com or pm me.thanks for any halp and look forward to the stay on the ef. -Scott

Welcome to this forum! Read Glacier991's A4LD rebuild diary for a better understanding of the A4LD transmission. It explains how to replace seals, hard parts, gaskets, make adjustments, torque bolts to the correct specifications, etc.

thanks for the pointers ill be sure to check em out

Dry clunk could be 'U'joints on the rear driveshaft.
Do you get the same clunk with foot on the brake and shifting from reverse to Drive and back? bigger tires work the 'U' joints a bit harder

I had a similar noise on my 2WD. Got underneath and started grabbing a nd shaking. All 4 bolts on the driveshaft at the differential had backed out 1/2 inch. Horrible roar and clanking between forward gears and Reverse on my 5spd.

Little loctite and a wrench and the noise is gone.

Now I just have to narrow down the popping in the front LH wheel area when I come up to a stop. As the vehicle's nose comes up from the braking force, there is a pop.
