Newbie to Ford with a few problems.

I am new to fords, and I have had bad luck with the one I have. Its a 93 Explorer XLT. First off the transmission is strating to go. Thats not to big of a deal. The item I am concearned with is this.... My wife was driving it shortly after we got it. She said she heard what sounded like a small explosion and then the explorer died. Turns out the radiator blew almost in half. I got it replaced and everything seemed ok. Then out of nowhere it dies again on her. This time i came to pick her up and saw a little bit of coolant under the truck. It did crank and I decided to drive it home. As I was driving, I also got the boom sound but this time i think it was the heater core. I have not repaired it yet. I am curious as to what could be causing this issue. The truck is not running hot according to the dash temp guage. Any onne else have this problem. I am having to tranny rebuilt as soon as i can get this problem solved.

Also I searched for what other vehicles rims would fit this truck, but only got results for a 4 wheel drive. Its a 2 wheel drive, and I have heard a set off of a mustang would fit. Is this true?

You most likely have a blown head gasket. A blown head gasket will allow exhaust to enter the cooling system raising the pressure in the system to the point that something has to give. The radiator was the first weak link, heater core was the next.

Welcome to the site. The 91-94 wheels have a larger than normal cutout to allow for the large auto hub assembly. I assume any second gen (95-01) wheels should fit. You lug spacing should be 5x4.5. Some Jeep wheels will fit. Some imports also use the 5x4.5 (5x113mm maybe?) but the backspacing, and weight rating likely wouldn't work. I think you want a 35mm backspacing but I'm not positive on that.

Also your rad cap may not be releasing pressure as designed, test or replace it.

Thank you for the replies. I found head gaskets on ebay for 13.99 each, so I will replace those when I replace the heater core as a precaution. I will also replace the radiator cap too. It cannot be that expensive. I was hoping for some mustang rims, or possibly the 20"s off of the newer f-150's, so thank you for answering that question as well. If anyone can think of anything else that may be causing the rad/heatercore problems, let me know and i will go ahaead and fix those issues as well. I have heard that the 4.0 liter engine has problems breaking the transmissions on those that have them. Is this a true issue? Is there another type of transmission that would bolt up and be a little stronger? Thanks again for the quick answers.

You might want to start with the rad cap first it's a lot easier than taking the heads off. I know that stant makes one that has a pressure relief valve on it

F-150 wheels won't fit. They have a larger bolt pattern.
