'93 XLT
Hi all, new here and stuff.
I have a 93 XLT with 254,000 miles, and its starting to show, so I thought I'd drop by and see if I can learn how to fix a few things, like my always-on ABS light and my recently non-functional 4WD. (Got stuck in the snow this morining while my wife drove out in her Jetta - that was embarassing.)

Anyway, before I go off to run a few searches, anybody know where I can find a list of compatible model years for salvage-yard diving? I need a new bumper, among other things.

Hi and welcome.

Couldn't help on the ABS light, but as you search for the 4x4 problem, you'll probably find a lot on both the transfer case shift motor, and the automatic hubs. Those are the most common things to go bad. There's a lot of info on it here, so putting those into the search form will probably narrow down the threads you have to read. Good luck and if you can't find your answer in the threads, feel free to ask.

The compatible years for your explorer are 91-94. There's also a few things you can take off later models (I think you can take the front seats from a second gen and they will bolt in, etc...). Also, some model year rangers (someone help me out here, I think it's late 80's/early 90's) are very similar, so you might find a bumper off one of those. But all 91-94 Explorers are virtually the same.

Hope I helped. Again, welcome :)

Well a 93 is a first Generation Explorer 91-94 so most everything should be compatible.

I'm not sure about your ABS & 4WD problems. In the second Gereration 95+ it's usually a speed sensor or something stuck in the transfer case. Do you hear anything with your 4WD when it's suppose to be on?

Sometimes I get a clicking noise from the back of vehicle, which I assume is coming from some electoinic module back there ( my Haynie's manual says its over the drivers side wheel in the cargo compartment) Sometimes, it clicks a few times, sometime I don't hear anything.

From what I've read so far, I'll start with cleaning off the speed sensor, crossing my fingers and cursing.

Changing the T-case fluid along with the sensors helped with my Auto-4WD problem. It's a cheap and easy start.

Welcome!!

As far as your 4wd troubles are concerned, this is a tell-tale sign of the electronic shift motor going south, so to speak. A quick fix, is to take it apart and clean it. This works for about %95 of the people here. I, however, was not so lucky. I had to replace mine. The part is around $250, plus whatever labor your mechaninc may tak on. This is, of course unless you do the work yourself. There are many threads here concerning this. Here is a website that may also prove helpful

Good luck!

That's an awesome link. unfortunately, I have to wait until the weather is good to work on the exploder, and i need the 4wd while the weather is bad! I need to buy a house with a garage.

Just to clear up something.... I don't believe the '91-94 Ex's had speed sensors on the transfer case. Those are for the Control Trac/Auto 4WD.

Your ABS light is probably a bad/dirty sensor.

Hearing the click from the back is good. When shifting to 4lo, you should hear a clunk. If not, then it's probably the shift motor itself.
