I have an '03 v6 4.0 Explorer with 116K miles.

On Friday, my truck rather suddenly (as in, didn't have the problem the previous day when I drove it) developed an odd problem that seems like it might be slippage, but not quite...

If I'm cruising along at 65 and come to an incline, the truck downshifts as normal to the normal RPMs (roughly 3,000) it always has, but I will NOT get a power boost, its as if the RPMs went up, but its still actually in OD, despite hearing the disengage/reengage at a higher RPM sounds. If I give it more gas and cause it to downshift again, it goes to 4,000, but I will actually begin LOSING speed.

I have plenty of power at low RPMs in all gears, including OD. However, once I get above 2,500 RPMs or so, my power falls off quickly. Also, there isn't any inappropriate revving of the engine, or bogging/missing sounds.

I'm up in the wonderful northwoods of Wisconsin now, so can't do much about it... but I'll have my mechanic buddy check the fluid and all...

My question is, what are the chances I'm lucky enough that its simply aerated or low fluid? What would be the next likely thing to check?

Thanks for any ideas!
