4wd doesn't work, 4th gear doesn't work.
Troubleshoot the 4x4 with transmission removed, or with replacement transmission already installed and everything else working except the 4wd?

So, I finished up the water pump, and new radiator and thermostat, got my 1993 XLT driving.

Brakes were squishy, needed pumped, fluid level was good... assuming the brake booster...

Sometimes hard to shift into 2nd or 3rd, and 5th and reverse are fine. But no 4th. If I keep trying would get a bit of grinding noise, so I didn't try to force it more.

Also tried to go into 4 hi while parked, in neutral, didn't depresd the clutch... didn't hear anything.

Good news, can get one from local junk yard, pulled for me for $250 with 30 day warranty.

Bad news, all the parts I know of cost about the same.
New clutch
New fly wheel
New clutch slave
Junk yard transmission.

I'm less sure about whether I should tackle the 4x4 issue when I have the transmission pulled, or after I make sure the transmission shifts through all the gears, and then come back to the 4x4 issue?

Is this the part I need, if my shift motor is bad, and that is why 4wd will not engage?

Not sure if there's supposed to be a pic in your post showing what part you're talking about?
There's a few things that can cause no 4wd. First thing is, you have to push in the clutch or it won't engage, you mentioned that out specifically did not push it in. So try that first.
If that doesn't do it, then out can look at the shift motor, and the auto hubs if you have auto hubs.
There's a 4wd troubleshooting thread stickies at the top of this section, in the useful threads list, if you need it.

There was supposed to be a link to a part on Amazon.

Yeah, I have been reading through the 4x4 trouble shooting guide. I also found out the part I meant to link is indeed the correct part.

I was mainly inquiring if I should buy that part and slap it on the replacement transmission. Learning a lot as I go. Unfortunately, being disabled, I do have to wait a lot for my friend to have time.

I will hit the thread back once I get some work done. I know there are a ton of useful information here. Thank you for your input.
