Tldr
4wd doesn't work, 4th gear doesn't work.
Troubleshoot the 4x4 with transmission removed, or with replacement transmission already installed and everything else working except the 4wd?
So, I finished up the water pump, and new radiator and thermostat, got my 1993 XLT driving.
Brakes were squishy, needed pumped, fluid level was good... assuming the brake booster...
Sometimes hard to shift into 2nd or 3rd, and 5th and reverse are fine. But no 4th. If I keep trying would get a bit of grinding noise, so I didn't try to force it more.
Also tried to go into 4 hi while parked, in neutral, didn't depresd the clutch... didn't hear anything.
Good news, can get one from local junk yard, pulled for me for $250 with 30 day warranty.
Bad news, all the parts I know of cost about the same.
New clutch
New fly wheel
New clutch slave
Junk yard transmission.
I'm less sure about whether I should tackle the 4x4 issue when I have the transmission pulled, or after I make sure the transmission shifts through all the gears, and then come back to the 4x4 issue?
