I wanted to thank everyone who helped out in my early threads. I have a 2002 xlt explorer that the 4x4 was not working. I had no lights on the dash and the wheels would spin,( no traction loc). I had checked the fuses, (which were fine), and turned to the forum for an answer. I concluded that since I had no lights on the dash that the shift motor probably wasn't getting a command either. This led me to the 4x4 control module. I decided this was the first reasonable place to start. It cost around $280.00 and was located behind the glove box bolted on the side of the AC evaporator. It actually was easy to get to (took about 15 minutes total to replace, NO LIE!). Simply lower the glove box door down and it's right in front of you. I then used my 9/32 deep socket to loosen the two little bolts on a bracket that retained it to the evaporator case. Then I removed 2 more 9/32 bolts that held the module to the bracket. (I had to finesse the bracket down which was a little tricky). Now I depressed the center tab that released the 2 wiring harnesses and replaced with the new module. IT WORKED!!!!!! Thanks again to all who helped. I got it fixed just in time because we got 4" of snow tonight! Oh and don't forget to disconnect the neg. side of the battery before you start the replacement, just in case.
