I have a 2001 Explorer with 4.0 auto 4WD. I have an issue which is driving me nuts. The truck will start and run great, for a very limited amount of time, maybe a tenth of a mile of a few hundred yards. Then it will idle down the road fine, but if you apply gas, it wants to die, rather than accelerate. Like there is no spark or no gas.I know it has proper fuel pressure, and fuel pump and filter are new. It also has new plugs and wires. And sometimes it will run a good 40 minutes, then act up and act up consistently from that point. The TPS is new as well, as is the exhaust cats, no restrictions. And if I shut down the truck and restart it, it will run normal for a couple hundred yards and then start acting up again. No codes. So what is most likely the cause? Camshaft sensor, Coil Pack, Crank sensor? What is the resistance value for the 2 wire Crank sensor on this truck? I cant seem to find that anywhere....

One other ting is the interior Fuse panel seems to be failing. I have had to replace the connection for radio with a addon inline fuse as the connection at the fuse panel was intermittent and I could not get a good connection through the panel. Is there any fuse/ connection in the interior panel that could also be intermittent and cause this type problem?

If I were not bald I would pull my hair out

I am at a loss what could be causing this issue.

Make sure the fuel tank is being vented properly. If for some reason the evap. emissions system is not properly venting the fuel tank, a suction will be created inside the fuel tank as the fuel is being drawn to the engine, and over the course of time such a vacuum inside the tank prevents fuel from being further removed, that is until the car is shut off for some time and the pressure equalizes with the rest of the system.

I drove it with the gasscap removed with same result. Dont think it is a venting issue

You verified that you have 60+psi at the rail and not just replaced the pump?

Plugs all look reasonable?

My monies on a problem with fuel supply, a variation in fuel pressure caused by split in hoses inside tank or pump not fuctioning correctly. Also make sure you have no vacuum leaks.

I am running it currently with the fuel pressure gauge attached. It is 65 PSI steady> And plugs are new as is plug wires

My ST had exact symptoms you described and it turned out to be the fuel pump. Replacement cured the problem. Check fuel pump relay.

To all who suggested a fuel pump, winner winner chicken dinner and thanks. I had left a pressure gauge hooked up and every time it was in park and not loaded the fuel pressure was normal. So I took the hood off and taped the pressure gauge to the windshield, and when under load the fuel pressure dropped like a stone. Obviously had a dud new fuel pump. Replaced it again and it is running like a champ. and before I put the hood back on test drove it with gauge attached and it held steady under load. Hate having to replace something I already did.... But it fixed it.

What brand of FP was it?

It was a carquest sold by advanceauto.
Lifetime warranty, but a big time pain to replace when it goes bad.

I installed an Airtex FP that totally crapped out in under 10K. Replaced it with a Bosch that's worked perfectly for close to 100K now. Since then I've installed 6 more Bosch FP's in all our Explorers/Mountaineers, they've all worked perfectly and they're quite cheap off eBay ($40 or less). IDK who provides CarQuest/Advances FP's. I think OE Ford pumps were Carters.
