So it happened. My 1997 ford explorer doesn't start. Checked fuel pressure and its very low (have no gauge). It just leaks some fuel while pressing the measure thingie on fuel rail. I have measured voltage on fuel pump wire and it gets power for a second or so when I switch the key. I have also taken a wire straight from battery to pump and if I run it like this I get some pressure but only just enough to give a slow flow and low pressure. The ground cable is very black inside. Not shiny like power cable when I tog some isolation of. Could this be a ground issue or is the pump kaput?

if the ground is bad then replace it, but if it gets 12v then its getting power

could also try to unhook the fuel regulator and see if that helps at all, plug the vac line before you try to start engine

try to do your fuel filter first.... drivers side frame rail

..if it dosnt fix it 100% get a new pump, a good 1, cheapies dont last long!

Fuel regulator seems to be the problem. Managed to take it of the truck and checked part no. When I tried to order a new one they told me it was obsolete. Looked everywhere but it seems to be impossible to find a new one or even a used from junkyard. What the word! The only solution I found is to fit a newer fuel rail on the truck. Any of you have some other ideas?

Are you talking about a Fuel Pressure Regulator? If you are, they're everywhere, including RockAuto.

Yes it's the fuel pressure regulator. Mine is not so easy to find. It has the markings 270 kPa 960314 663, 0 280 160 555, 97 IF-9 C 698-AB. This one I have not found on any site. Some stores has them listed but no stock and when I call them they all have the same answer. Obsolete...

not in Sweden

They may not be that plentiful in Sweden where Bugmanovski is located. I'm betting the vehicle has the SOHC V6 since they were popular worldwide exports. Rock Auto has no fuel pressure regulator (FPR) listed for the 1997 or 1998 SOHC V6 Explorer. However, the FPR for the OHV V6 should be identical. Explorers went to non-return fuel system in 1999. Rock Auto lists the following for the return fuel system with Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): 91TF9C968AA, 92TF9C968AA, CM4713, CM4723, F1TZ9C968A, F2TZ9C968A, F37Z9C968A, ZZL113280, ZZL213280, ZZM213280:

STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # PR61T
STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS Part # PR61
AIRTEX Part # 5G1158
MOTORCRAFT Part # CM4713

See the following thread for testing the FPR: Ford Explorer Ranger Fuel pressure test procedure

They actually are not the right part for my truck. The FPR on my truck has other fittings than the parts you mentioned above. Mine look like this one:

As you can see the fittings to attach it to the fuel rail is on my truck completely flat and the unit is smaller.

Maybe it is easier to put in a 1999 type of fuel pump and plug the FPR? Will this work?

They may not look exactly the same, but people have said/written the fittings are the same. To me, unless the braided hose doesn't screw off...it looks like the only difference is the vacuum line being on the side versus the top of the unit. Maybe I'm seeing it wrong.
