No headers =]]

Well, my neighbor's putting my headers in for $150! Good stuff right here!

Why not go out a pick up some replacement bolts?

Well about the replacements, the exhaust manifolds are still on, so the only way to get them off would be saw them, but then I wouldn't have a way to twist the headless bolts out.

The studs that will remain will be a PITA but CAN be removed. Everyone that has removed stuck studs has their own particular way which works best for them and there are several ways.

I personally use a lot of AeroKroil and a pipe wrench to pull them, usually works. There are also many stud extractor kits available.

My advice is to not give up on the headers just because the nut/studs are stuck. 90% of the time, when you mess with exhaust manifold studs......they will be extremely rusted and stuck.

I am sure you can get all kinds of advice here for removing the studs.........don't give up yet!!

Robb

Well my advise would have been to pull them by hand, not with a gun... I did mine by hand and the only bold I had a problem with was one of the collector bolts... So we cut that one in half, since that one didn't really matter...

How'd you get the stud out after you cut it? I was working by hand after the guns didn't work, and since I couldn't get the proper angle I ended up stripping the heads on a few of them. It's weird because the lower bolts come off easily. For the easy bolts I was able to use a ratchet, and the harder ones I moved up to the breaker bar with still no luck.

Well I found some stuff, Liquid Wrench, kinda like WD40 but I'm sure it's better, it's $28 for 11oz can. What do you all recommend for removing the studs after I cut the heads? I'm going through the fender since it's hard to get anything through the top.

$28 for Liquid Wrench? You sure about that? I can get Liquid Wrench for a small fraction of that and IMHO, it isn't much better than WD40.

I use a product called AeroKroil, love it!!

A lot of guys here speak of something called PB Blaster, but I don't know exactly what it is. Maybe a search would give a little more info on it. Actually, somewhere here is a thread all about everyone's favorite penetrating oils.

Good Luck!

Robb

EDIT: WOW! "penetrating oil", that just sounds funny!:D I need to find a new way to describe that stuff

Well that was on the Schucks site, maybe a typo. Right now I'm looking at stud extractors. How do these things work?

PB Blaster... you can get it at autozone for about 5 bucks a can. Though it doesn't come with a straw... so steal one off a WD-40 bottle

It got me through before I had air tools.

I'll also vouch for PB Blaster... And don't worry about not having a straw.. just spray everywhere shops are supposed to be messy!

Ok. Well my neighbor came over and looked at the bolts. He said they'd be easy to get off, and brought over a Metrinch set (I've never heard of it). I put a picture below. He fit a socket on a rounded bolt and said this and some Blaster will get the bolts off without much hesitation. This weekend or next weekend we're gonna work on it and maybe get the headers on. Before I had only worked an hour and a half (time also including taking off fender walls and some other stuff). Wish me luck!

NEVER use air tools on stock exhaust bolts. NEVER!!:nono:

that is why they rounded off in the first place. a 1/2 ratchet with a cheater bar and some penlube would have gotten them off the first time, and not rounded them. just remember this next time. ;)

Well the air tools didn't round them. The air tools connected throroughly, what rounded them was not angling the sockets enough when I was trying by hand, and not using enough/the right penetrating oil.

Well, Congrats Dude!!

Glad you decided to take another whack at it and try to get those headers on. Hope it works out!! BTW, it may be a good idea to just replace all of the stud while you are there. They aren't expensive and readily available.

Good Luck!

Robb

Thanks! My headers come with Stage 8 locking bolts, so I've got no problem in that department.
