flush the system, hope you dont have a head gasket failure... might as well replace the thermostat

what would be signs of head gasket failure

If the temp gauge is reading normal(around mid range), then it's not the Tstat. Are the hoses going to the heater core hot? My guess is that you have a clogged heater core. Try back flushing the core.

i dont want to sound stupid, but how do you backflush the heater core

you can get a kit from an Auto parts store,

its a t-fitting that you put inline on one of your heater core lines, you then hook it up to a garden hose and run the vehicle with the hose on and the Radiator cap off.

its easy as pie and just run it till the water comes out is all clear. and the best thing is that you just leave the t-fitting in there for future use.

Just makes sure you drain most of the water out, then fill it back up with your Antifreeze/Distilled 50/50 mix.

oh and you may wanna run some kind of Radiator flush before-hand to help loosen up some crud.

Prestone makes the kits and flush chemical and you can get both at Cambodian tire.

check your radiator level, if your coolant is really low, you wont get heat either.
