2006 Ford explorer XLT
Hi I bought my son a 2006 explorer xlt. Don’t think he spoiled it’s best to death. But wondering why would the overdrive not work in this? Is there a fuse linked to the gear shift button on the side of the gearshift? This is a 2006 explorer xlt with 4.6 in it. Thanks for any help anyone might have.

The 6R60 six speed transmissions are sensitive about fluid level and its condition. As a first try I would drop the pan, change the filter and refill. Then disconnect the battery for an hour so the computer can relearn its operating parameters. Doing this corrected a shifting issue I had when I bought my 2010 Mountaineer and has done the same for others here. Is the dash light on indicating OD is locked out? How many miles are on the vehicle?

Oh, and welcome to Explorer Forum. You should post your problem to the 4th Gen forum so more people will see it.

No o light ever comes on for o/don’t even at startup. This has 184,000 on her. We been calling her Betty white

Have you checked for codes? I still recommend the pan drop, filter change, refill and clearing the computer. This is probably long overdue maintenance at a minimum.

Based on that - it could just be the bulb. You mentioned that it's a V8 - so it has the 6R60 in it. That is a 6 speed transmission with overdrive on. Have you counted the shifts? I would definitely count how many times it shifts before I started digging into anything else if the light doesn't ever come on. If you get 6 shifts, hit the button and see if you get 4 at that point. That will tell you if the button is working or not.
Edit - if you have trouble counting the shifts then note if the engine RPM changes at a set speed if you press the button.

Tell us what RPM you are running when cruising at 60 mph with minimal engine load.
