What does it take to replace the clutch coil in the transfer case? I think mine is shot. I changed the TC relay and the fronts still wont engage in 4WD Lo or Hi. The shift motor seems fine - it switches between hi and low with a nice firm clunk.

The electrical resistance on the brown wire to ground is open. I checked it at the connector underneath the car. I think the coil is toast. What is involved in changing it?

Thanks,

If by resistance to ground is open, you mean very high resistance, like millions of ohms, you are right, the clutch coil is burnt out, open, OR the brown wire is broken off inside the transfer case. Either way, disassembly of the TC is necessary, or replace the whole TC. A used TC might cost less than the new clutch, but I doubt it. If you are mechanically adept, yank out the TC, and open it up. If not sure of doing that, but capable of remove & replace TC, your labor doing so would save a lot of bucks. imp

I took it to my friendly neighborhood transmission shop and they were able to clear the computer fault codes and get it working again.
