1998 sport 4x4
1998 4x4 Sport, around 150k miles on it.

Out of the blue my Ex won't go backwards. Forward gears all seem fine but when I put it in reverse it won't go anywhere.

Searching threads seems to indicate it might be a problem with the shift fork in the transfer case.

Does this sound plausible ? Likely ?

I don't think a shift fork in the tcase will cause this. I am sure Glacier or Brooklyn will chime in and help you out. If I was to guess I would say maybe you have a solenoid bad maybe a bad seal internally.

Here is Glaciers quote on this issue but yes it could be the fork as well.

No reverse in the 5R55 has a variety of possible culprits... some can only be fixed by a pull out and teardown.... so let's explore those that MIGHT not need that!

(The pull out teardown involve the reverse clutch assembly)

Transmission shift cable or bracket damaged. The Digital Tranmission range Sensor assembly out of adjustment.

Filter damaged, or plugged. Seal cut or damaged.

Valve body screws out of torque specification - retorque main valve body screws.

reverse modulator bore spool and or spring damaged, or stuck.

That is about it tranny wise. But as others note, you could have a TC issue too.

Broken transfer case very likely!!!

The separator plate gaskets on this transmission could be the cause of this problem. They are known to blow out. If you check the torque on the VB bolts, and you find some are loose, then it will bleed off hydraulic pressure. A lot of the time when you find the VB bolts loose, the gaskets on the separator plates might bad too. I would suggest that you drop the VB, and inspect those gaskets, then retorque everything with an In. Lbs. torque wrench.

One thing worth noting, the whole transmission was gone thru by a ford dealer tranny shop about 18 months ago .. so miles since that rebuild aren't that many.

no reverse

so what was the culprit? I have the exact same problem withmy 99 sport 4x4. Just went out one day. I changed the filter/fluid which actually looked good. I did not see any noticable issues with the valve body. Ford put a new vb in about 50k ago.
