OK, newbie here, so I hope I am posting in the right place.
A few months back we were driving on the highway with the cruise control set and all of a sudden it went out along with the speedometer and the odometer(s). We Replaced the VSS and all was well. (the thing was cracked in half!) Driveability was kinda poor when it went out. Something wasn't getting the right signal so at 2nd gear it would rev high until it torqued out and had to shift. This also went away with the 1st VVS exchange.
FF>> 1 month later and it happens again. No speedo, no odo, no cruise and driveability is poor. Again, at 2nd gear when it should shift, it revs high between 3-4k and then jumps when it does finally shift. I replaced the VSS again but no luck this time. My guess is it can't be good on the engine or tranny if it's shifting like that. The only thing different this time is that when I get up to highway speeds, the speedo needle will bounce for a moment.
Anybody have any clue what it could be? I've ready everything from the ABS sensor (does my truck even have this? it's a 97), to the Crankshaft Sensor or the wiring cluster. Everything else that is connected to the PCM seems to work ok, so can I rule that out? What in the heck could it be? When the VSS was replaced, I was told the gear inside was in fine condition.
I've read every thread I can here and can't seem to find anyone who has had this problem WITH poor driveability. Any ideas?
I've been driving like this for a few months now and it's really starting to get on my nerves. I have 2 year old and live in the mountains. I don't want it to leave me stranded.
Oh, and we've tested all the fuses and those are fine too.
