I have a 2006 Explorer XLT 4WD 4.0 V6 with 135k on it.
I have 2 problems with the car.
Firstly, when I pull off and when I come to a standstill, I can hear chattering/a gratting noise underneath the front of the car. I had my wife drive it slowly and the noise is comming from the front differential pinion yoke. With the car parked, I can feel a lot of play in the joint. There are no oil leaks here.
Question - Does this joint wear out and thus need replacing and if so, is it a hard job?
Secondly, 1000 miles ago, I replaced the passenger side driveaxle. At the time, I didn't replace any seals. I can see oil leaking around at the area where the driveaxle enters the differential. I think it has been leaking since I fitted it and not before.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to any suggestions.
BTW - I have some photos which I took which show the driveaxle oil leak and the joint where the noise is comming from, but I can't see where to upload or attach the photos to this posting.
