Hello I am a new member. I have a 1998 Ford Explorer and the problem is sometimes when I go up or a down hill, there is a noise like a siren coming from the engine area, it does this for a short time and then stops. Does any one have any idea what is causing this? My wife thinks the vehicle sounds like it wants to change gears.

Try cleaning your IAC. It is one thing under the hood that will sound like a siren, even though it usually only does it at idle. It's a simple place to start. Look in the Useful Threads forum, and you should find one on how to clean/replace it. Can also search for IAC - will find lots of threads about it.
