I recently had my auto transmission rebuilt by a local transmission shop. It was running smooth and quite for the first 700 miles or so. Now all of a sudden I am hearing noises. At about 1400-1600 rpm with gas being pressed there is a sound like "metal scratching/rattling". There is also a slight "grind" sound when gas pedal is pushed about 10% in mostly first and second gear. No performance issues or anything even with sound. Less than 1000 miles since rebuild still.

P.S. - I also checked my tranny fluid and it seemed to be very high (up to the letters on the dipstick which are a good 1.5"-2" up). Big problem or no? No leaks either. Could this be the cause of my new sounds?

Help would be greatly appreciated. I'm worried I might need more work done and I can't afford it. Thanks.

You should not over-fill automatic transmissions, sounds like it is very over-filled. You can pull off a cooler hose and idle the engine to remove some fluid, that would be easier then trying to remove the pan etc. I would take it back to the guy that rebuilt it, it should be under warranty. A grinding/metallic sound is never good.

ok. kinda stupid question, but the trans cooler is the "little radiator" in front of the main radiator right?

ok. so i took it back to the tranny shop and found out that the sound was coming from the Catalytic Converter. its just a loose heat shield so its no big deal as long as i can deal with the noise. they also took the extra atf out for me.
