My 00 EB has a new noise when braking. When braking on the highway you can sometimes feel some vibration in the steering wheel, if you are braking hard. However, the noise which I normally hear is when you are braking and the noise starts at around 25 mph. If you are cruising at 50 mph and start to brake, then this noise will NOT start until around 25mph. The noise is hard to describe, but it sounds like loud tires to an extent and it coming from the front end. I do NOT hear this noise when coasting and coming to a stop. It also appears to be louder if you have to brake hard.

I have new Yokohama tires and this same noise occured on my old Good Year tires. I started hearing this noise after I had 2 new lower Moog ball joints installed in the front earlier this year.

Last night there was a ton of traffic on the highway so it was stop and go for about a half hour, so once the traffic broke and I got the X up to 70 mph+ the car started to shake and vibrate. I applied the brake and the vibration and shake got WORSE. This was right before my exit. I had to jump back onto another highway about 15 minutes later and the car didn't shake at all. That was the first time I ever felt this shake and vibration on highway.

My question is could this be bad rotors (tire noise I hear when braking)? I installed new brake pads last winter, but the rotors have around 40k miles on them.

My 00 EB has 146K on the odometer. Thanks for the help and sorry for the long post

Anybody experience similar issues with their X?

Weird. It would vibrate then it wouldnt?

Usually a vibration means something is out of balance. wheels or drive shaft specifically.

iit seems to me that you have a couple of different concerns going on. the noise your hearing as you brake could be your tires or your wheel bearings starting to go. as you brake you transfer a good amount of weight onto the front tires. check out your front tires feel the tread on them. see if they are chopped/ not wearing correctly. if your rear tires feel better than the front try rotating them and see if there is a difference. as for the vibration at 70 seems like your wheels are out of balance. the vibration when you brake is coming from the rotors they are warped. two causes for this is not cutting the rotors when you replace pads or lug nuts are not torqued evenly. yes the vibration while braking can come and go as you drive as the rotors get hot. hope this helps

Thanks for the replies. The tires are fairly new, so I will move the rears to the front to see if that helps. I drove the car yesterday for 60 miles and there was no vibration.

The noise which I hear when braking (at around 25mph) could be front wheel bearings?
