Hi, I have a 2005 explorer 4.6L AWD. I have a nerve racking issue! I start up my car. The engine almost sounds like its knocking. I put it in gear and it goes away. Then as soon as I push on the accelerator it starts a whinning noise. It gets louder as I accelerat. It's almost like an air raid siren. I googled this issue. I changed my idler pulley. But the problem continues. I actually have to drive to Chicago Sunday morning for business, so I'm trying to figure out this issue and get it resulved before I have to leave. Unfortunately I can't get into see a mechanic anywhere before then do to work. But I am ok around the garage and eager to achieve this goal. Any help or input you go a long way. I'm willing to check anything at this point. Thanks for anyone that helps me.

I did change the idler pulley in the video you posted for me. However, I didn't change the pulley on the tensioner. I will change that as soon as I get off of work today. Hopefully this will do the trick. And that is the sound that I'm getting out of my motor. The cross your fingers for me! Lol. I'll update to let you know if that fixed my issue. And thanks so much for taking the time to reply back to me. I greatly appreciate it. Especially with the weather coming. I don't really want to take her 4 cylinder 2wd suv. Thanks again

Update from my last post. I changed the tension pulley also. And it worked like a charm. I put a stethoscope to it before I changed it to double check it. And I could here the vibrations. So anyone that has this issue. Please review the utube link given to me and try that fix first. It was only $20 for each pulley. I also went ahead and bought a new surpentine belt to go with it. I thank the person that assisted me. And hope in someone else's search for this issue they are able to possibly find this and it helps them as well. THANKS AGAIN!!!

Glad it worked out and thanks for posting the results. Really helps other who encounter the same issue.

You can usually tell if the pulley's are bad based on how freely they spin (with no load, ie no belt.) They should only rotate maybe one turn and stop.
Also, highly recomend you replace the whole tensioner and not just the pulley.
Don't want that sucker coming apart, or you'll be replacing more than the tensioner.
Having worked in a parts store, I can attest to this happening. Maybe not that frequently, but those tensioners are under some pressure.

So glad to hear that you got it fixed! Without two vehicles it can be hard sometimes to never miss an event due to a breakdown. Nice to see your Ex is all good and ready to go to Chicago!
