This is my first post in the forums. I have searched hard for a similar problem with no luck.

I have a '98 X 4x4 sport 4.0 SOHC auto trany.
It runs great when the engine/trany is cold but once everything warms up the problems show up. When I accelerate there is a jerky feeling that you can feel in the steering wheel. You can also hear a strange noise but i can't really figure out where exactly its coming from. The harder you push the engine, the harder the jerks are until you get the trany to downshift(the problem goes away if you do that). It doesn't really feel like its slipping and I know it isn't an issue with the plugs and wires, etc. Also when I come to a stop it feels like something is dis-engaging.

I'm not really good at describing this so if you need more info, please let me know. So far i have changed the trany fluid and greased the slip yoke to see if that eliminated some of the problems but no luck. I have also taken a look at the U-joints but they seem to be fine (not loose or anything).

Could it be:
Torque converter (i really hope not)
TC lock-out switch (I think thats what it's called)

Thanks for all your time and advice!

can anyone offer a little advice? I am still trying tofigure out what is going on but I have run out of ideas.
Thanks again

Check the fluid level in the transfer case. My guess would be Torque Converter or Transfer Case problem.

thanks for your help. I checked the transfer case fluid and it was really low so i flushed it and it works great. I should have just started with the simplest solution but hind sight is 20/20. thanks again

When it comes to Explorers, KISS is my motto. Glad the simple solution resolved the problem.
