Hello all,
I just bought an explorer a few weeks ago. Today it started running extreanly rough and jerky in 2nd 3rd and 4th gear between 1500-3000rpm only. Once it hits 3000 rpm it runs fine. It's a 93 xlt 4.0 5speed. Any ideas? The check oil light came on, I added some oil and it went away so I don't think that has anything to do with it. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Do you have enough tranny fluid?

I'm not sure I'll go check. Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm sorry but for some reason I can not find the tranny dip stick. this is the first time I've looked for it. It can't be that hard to find. Can some one please tell me where it is. I feel stupid now.

That's where I thought it would be. It's not there. What should I do now?

haha wait..Manual Trannys do have tranny fluid right??? Or am i just being stupid

Damn, I never thought of that. I'm not sure my self.

I pretty sure you're right. Manual trans don't have fluid. That sloves that ida anyone know where I should go from here. Thanks

manual transmissions do have fluid, they just don't normally use a dipstick to check. Normally, you pull the fill plug on the side of the transmission and stick your finger in. If your finger comes out with fluid on it, then there's enough fluid. I'm not real familiar with the M5OD, so I'm not much help beyond that.
1st thimg I think of is the clutch. Can you tell if the jerking is from the engine hiccupping, or does it seem to be elsewhere in the powertrain?

how is the gas milage, it may be a bad fuel pressure regulator

Gas milage is about 13 mpg. I haven't tried pulling any codes. I thought that the "check engine" light had to be on in order to pull codes. Am I wrong?

Common misconception. You can pull codes anytime you want. Sometimes you can get codes even though the CEL isn't on, sometimes you'll get all pass codes. In either case, you can pull the codes and find out what the computer is seeing.

Ok, pulled the codes and go thtis:
157C MAF Fault, low voltage
172C HEGO (HO2S) sensor fault/lean
176C HEGO (HO2S) sendor fault/always lean
186C Fault in injector pulse width current/high
All of these codes came from the continous memory part of the test. Does anyone have any ideas.
Thanks

ok looks like you possibly have a bad 02 sensor, as well as a dirty maf sensor

Ok thanks for the help. Should I get a new MAF or just try to clean it off

first off make sure it is plugged in. and then just clean it
