So I was changing out the stereo HU and thought I would cut the useless vent in the trim and the hole behind it to add some wires for something like a cell or zune charger since I dont have a center console and it would keep the wire neat. Has anyone done something with it? Or the empty area below the headlights know?

I may be completely misunderstanding you buuuuuuut...

That vent isnt used for heat, but for a/c, you might not want to remove it as the next owner of your vehicle may want to have a/c

There are two right over the stereo the one on the right is used by the a/c but the one on the left is nothing. It has the directional fins but is blocked.

It must be different on the older models, on mine both vents go to the same tube.

this is a 2wd right?
it sounds like the vent is where the 4x4 electric switch would be.

either way, there are two vents there, so if the one still blows, then who cares about the useless one, id say cut it out and go for it, sounds like a cool idea, id try it if my 4x4 switch wasnt there.

You could make it into a useful vent by enlarging the vent tube behind it.

If you want to add something to the panel, you could always get the switch plate from a 4WD, then modify that rather than your stock vent panel. That way you'd already have a smooth panel and could use the switch part for whatever you put in there, plus you'd have your stock panel to throw back in as well.

It's a 2WD Explorer. The Left Box is where the 4x4 and 4Low Buttons are supposed to be.

I have seen guys put another gauge in there. Like a Trans Temp Gauge, or A/F gauge.

Yea and like anime said if you go to the junkyard and pick up the vent from a 4wd drive model the hole is already cut out.

Never would have thought about getting a vent from salvage. Great idea

I thought he was talking about a 2nd gen at first lol I was like why the hell dont his vents work? Then I realized it was a 1st gen....theres only one vent and then nothing, or a 4x4 switch.

Just did this the other day..
