Yep! I did it. I totally didn't mark the lifters after I took them out. So now I just gotta put them back in no matter how mixed up they are.

Am I going to cause myself grief by doing this? They all seem to be in good condition. Damn expensive to get a new cam and lifter though. I dunno. That's probably what I'll end up having to do anyways. Anybody else been through this?

I'm not an expert, but I've fouled up quite a few times in my life....

since the 4.0 has roller lifters, I assume the problem is not as severe as with a flat bottom regular lifters found in older engines. the reason I say this is that back in my racing days (60's & 70's) it wasn't uncommon to swap roller lifters around in an engine, heck we ran one season on dirt with two Crane lifters in an engiine with an Engle roller cam. (some idiot "lost" two of the Engle roller lifters...lol)

if you haven't had a 4.0 apart before, expect the lifters to rattle a bunch when you put it back together. it will quieten down...

unless some expert here can give a strong reason, I'd say put it back together and crank her up !

.....jjf

No REAL issue with mixing up the lifters.

As was said before, it's not a big deal, like with a Flat Tappet Lifter.

Coat them with assembly lube, and drop `em in.

Whew! Thanks for the vote of confidence. I really didn't intend to mix them up. I had the block upside down and the lifters started falling out. Doh! Live and learn! I got new heads coming. I couldn't believe the big ol' crack plain as day right in the combustion chamber. Gonna put new bearings in and re-ring it. For having 165,000 miles the crank is in still within specs. Lucky me @@.
