noob question about tc's

i did a search for transfer case identification and it yielded nothing for me but i have a 97 2door sport 4.0 efi im trying to identify the transfer case and transmission as they have locked up. can someone help me please?

You have a Borg Warner BW4405 transfer case. Your transmission is either a 4r55e, or a 5r55e, I'm not sure when they changed to a 5r. I think you have the 4r55e. Were you having trans problems prior to "locking up"?

well actually its a 5 speed. sorry for that miscommunication. but before it would actually seem to slip out of gear and could pump the clutch and it would reengage. i really dont have much info as this is my brothers x im just trying to find the cheapest way to fix it. really dont know if it is the tc or the tranny but wanna get as much info as possible before i make a decision and start tearing down and rebuilding. thanks for the help though i apprecitate it greatly.

All 97s with either 4.0 engine (SOHC or OHV) had the 5R55E. It was introduced in 97.

You have the Mazda m5r1 if it's a stick.

Indeed, the way I read it, he's got a manual trans... That would be the M5R1, with a Borg-Warner 44-05 transfer case.
