Im a new guy to this forum, and I need help. I am a long time honda guy (yukky). My wife owns a 05 explorer with advan track. She has a problem with it and our local mechanic is at a loss as to what's wrong. I use honda forums alot and answer many questions, my turn now. Please help me out. Problem is when truck is cold wife starts and puts in reverse. Out driveway to street. While turning wheel in reverse wheel chutters like a tire rubbing wheel well (but no rubbing). She then goes to drive and finishes turn and wheel still chutters. Driving straight now the truck bogs down (not engine), like a tranny issue. Wife tricks it and releases throttle and reapplies throttle. After doing this a few times the advana trac system warning light comes on saying system is off and 4x4 turns on. Truck will ride fine after that, but advan trac is off and 4x4 light blinks. Also brake pedal will push back and make vacuum leak type of sound before warning lights appear. Wheel will also make a grinding noise while rolling in bog down mode. Please help us out. We need to get this fixed, but need to know what and how much $. Thanks in advance.

No answer for this. Come on guys, somebody knows, help me out.

I know nothing about these but would this advan trac have a seperate computer? If so maybe thats your problem cause if it drives fine in 4x4 then it shouldnt be mechanical (it would do it all the time if it was).

There is no check engine light, but advanta trac light comes on, and 4x4 light comes on and off. How do you check these codes, obd2 reader? Wife now complains of a smoke smell coming from rear. Can advanta trac be turned off other then console button.

You have a broken tone ring on the rear axle shafts. When the ring breaks it does all kinds of funny things. It will also apply the brakes when it sees a wheel speed sensor mismatch. That would be the smoking/brake smoke possibly.

Now we are getting somewhere. Are these rings hard to install? Truck does seem as if it brakes itself, that is probably the bogging down I talked about. Thanks alot. Any more advice would be great.

There are special tools to install the tone ring. If you at the axle shaft wher it meets the knuckle you can inspect the ring. Usually they are cracked but could be completely loose and just sitting there.

Part is like $40-50 I think and probably like 2 hours labor.

Would this stop causing problems when truck warms up? Once truck warms up advanta trac turns itself off and 4x4 turns on and off. Message center says check advanta track then advanta track off. 4x4 light does not stay on, it will come on for a while and go off. Then Back on and so on, we do not push button to engage 4x4.Truck will drive fine after that, but lights stay on dash.

Took to dealer. Needed driver front wheel speed sensor. Fixed all the problems, truck is back. $350 with an oil change ;) yeah
