Hello all, just became an Explorer owner. White 1998 XLT, V8 AWD, 165K miles, tan leather interior, pretty nice shape except for an oil leak. Anyway, joined up to find info on whatever ails it, and eventually to show it off when I get it tricked out to where I want it. My experience level is: Mechanically inclined, just not much with cars. Not completely stupid, but close enough to it to make me nervous. Have done a few projects on other cars I've owned, but I'm nowhere close to qualifying (yet) as a gearhead.

Yeah, I know the leak could be the oil pan gasket, which would really suck, but I bought it for way below blue book so costwise it would end up a little better than paying blue book even if I do have to replace the pan gasket. Still, not looking forward to that possiblity. That said, the leak appears to be low on the driver' side near the oil filter, doesn't appear to be from higher up. So far it's a pretty slow drip and not just puking oil, but it's not insignificant. Just don't know yet how fast it's leaking. My guess from having a similar leak on my previous car (88 BMW 325i) is that it might be the oil pressure sensor, but not sure yet.
Any wisdom from the Explorer Yodas? Thanks in advance!
