So i bought some Infinity Perfect 6.5s off ebay. Well i procrastinated on getting the installed and now i have a job at Best Buy so i get a good rate on install labor. I went to get them to install and they said they wouldnt recomend running them without an amp because they woud be straining and i could blow them.

That sounds like a bunch of horsecrap to me but i dont know jack about car audio. Is there any truth to what they said. The Max power handling for the speakers is 100 watts RMS. Im running a Pioneer 7400 something or rather headunit which puts out 22 watts rms x 4.

a small 4 channel or 2 channel might be in your best interest.... IMO underpowering components isnt such a big deal.
IT may sound okay off the headunit power but im sure they will hit nicely with an amp.

I looked on ebay/infinity for some power numbers and it says the WHOLE component system take 100watts RMS 400 max.

If you are really worried about this email infinity and ask them what they think... for the most part (not always) they know whats best for their equipment

It is a big deal to under power speakers/components.
The best buy guy is right.

I also have infinity perfects 6.1's and feed them 85watts rms to each.

Check out my site and see my setup look at sig.

Edited part:

the perfects were a pain to install. Make sure they are careful to install it. These mids put out some nice excursion so make sure they leave space between the door plastic and the speaker.

Try your best not to underpower them. You'll try to turn them up louder than your HU can support, and it will begin to clip and distort and that will damage your speakers. It is way more common for speakers to be damaged from underpowering than it is for overpowering them. Plus putting a 100w amp on them will make them sound much better. I would make the money and buy the amp, you wont regret it.
