- 1991 Ford Explorer
I just got my first vehicle purchased just for taking off road. I was going to do the jeep thing because well almost everyone does the jeep thing. Which was hard as I am a Ford guy, after much research I decided on a 1'st gen explorer. I wanted; 4door 4x4 5spd and manual Tcase. Just purchased a straight 1991 with all those things. With the purchase I also got the front section of a frame with a D35 and another rear axle with a 4'' super lift attached.
I had always planned on just going 2'' with coils or coil spacers and rebuilding the rear spring pack with F150 springs. Didn't really see the need for going 4''.
I have no ambitions to turn this thing into a serious rock crawler, but my kids are starting to get a little older and love being in the mountains and on trails. I am also planning on building a small camping trailer to pull with it. So now I am in a quandary, do I install the kit I currently have or sell it on craigslist and just do a basic 2-2.5" lift. While this is my first post I have read and reread many many posts on lifts and still am not sure which path to take.
